Ok Duke-

Color picker. I hold Alt while my brush tool is selected, and it gives me a color picker. I typically will choose a color scheme and make a pallate to work from. Like, 4-5 colors, make sure you have cool and warm in there. The closer to the viewer you get, the higher contrast there is, hence darker colors.

Tutorial- the tutorial I'm using is a Gnomon dvd, which costs around 50 bucks. So... not sure if you want to hit that route for now. I borrowed mine from my art director. You can find good tutorials in a magazine called: Imagine FX. You can pick it up in Barnes and Noble or Borders, comes out monthly.

The steam- I have no idea man. Custom texture brushes over a soft brush painted base, if that makes sense.

Hope that helps.

Honestly, they're a bit too expensive to buy one by yourself, and pretty complex and advanced stuff. For right now, I'd say to check out all the free stuff you already have access to! Hop on google and youtube and look up some tutorials!
